22007

by Bill Morgen

 Updated October 10, 2007

Well it's that time again. I hope everyone had a festive holiday season. As we conclude the winter layover and enter spring, I know many of you are preparing your boats for an early launch.

We have some nice activities planned for the '07 season. Please take a moment to review our schedule of events. We are open for additional suggestions and ideas.

Our first scheduled event is our Opening Day/Annual Wine and Cheese Party on May 27.
This is an open affair to members and non-members. Participants are asked to bring a tray
(to share) and their favorite beverage. We will have a short general meeting and Memorial
ceremony to honor our Veterans.

Welcome Aboard New Members Russ Carlson (Avalon); Joe & Kathy Hayman (Waretown); Gary Goldblatt (Ocean City); George & Barbra Davis (Fortesque); Tom & Anna Benigno (Wildwood); Vincent (Vin) & Elizabeth Sparano (Waretown); George & Paula Zlotnicki (Philadelphia); John & Catherine Hyde (White House Station, NJ); Bruce & Patricia Hoagland (Manahawkin, NJ); Kevin Roche (Media, PA); Jeff & Christine Beach (Burlington Twp., NJ).  It's an honor to welcome our newest friends and members.

The 8th Annual Richard West Wheel Chair Race held on June 16 on Long Beach Island was a grand success. Many thanks to our volunteers for a great turnout and the financial support of our many members. A special note of thanks to Cecilia & Chris West for hosting a cocktail party afterward to thank LVYC and the many participants. It was great!

Memorial Day/Wine & Cheese Party May 27

Many thanks to the members that were able to attend our Opening Day ceremonies. The program this year was a 1950's theme with decorations and dress. As usual the array of specialty 'home made' dishes exceeded everyone's expectations. Several Vets were in attendance; the Memorial service by Chaplain Nancy Cummings brought tears to the eyes of many. The celebration of friends, food and beverage, continued until mid evening. Many thanks to all for your participation and support. A grateful thanks to host Tom and Marie Leaming, Commodore Russ Mehalick, Vice Commodore Bob & Nancy Cummings, R/C Robert Powell, and Rita Morgen for making the party a success.

Commodore Fluke Tournament June 29

Twenty six members and friends participated in our third contest. It was a little sketchy at first with mild rains and the threat of thunderstorms, but as usual the weatherperson was wrong and it turned out to be a decent day.

Commodore Russ Mehalick & his crew of 'The Bounty' won the grand prize with his catch of a 25.5" Fluke, 6.88 lbs.; Port Captain Lyle Clark placed 2nd at 22.0", 4.05 lbs.

We had some special guests participating in the Fluke Contest representing the Delaware River area. Two Officers from the Delaware River Rats Yacht Club, SAR George Zlotnicki, Treasurer Charles Walczak, his son Matt, and the grand surprise of all, his daughter Kristen, Princess of the DRRYC. The latter is an honor and voted on by all members; there may be 30+ contestants within the club. As Princess of DRRYC Kristen is a contestant in the Delaware River Yachtsmens League Pageant. If selected as the DRYL Queen (38 clubs) scholarship money is awarded to the winner+ honors.

A special note of Thanks to V/C Bob Cummings, Atty Jeff Brenner, his Father John and Grand Father Junior, for helping with the preparation and delivery of all supplies to the beach. Hats off to our chef Bob Cummings for a great BBQ with all the trimmings!

July 14th celebration (Christmas in July)

Our July 4th BBQ was a grand success with 46 members and friends in attendance. We had 8oz burgers, 1/4 lb hot dogs, chicken, salads, and all the trimmings of an old fashion BBQ+. Our three chefs, V/C Bob Cummings, Russ, Nancy and Rita did an excellent job in preparation, cooking, and service. Contrats to all.

The marina was decorated with Christmas trees, garland, canes, and Santa ornaments by Russ, Bob, and Loraine (crew of The Bounty). Russ played Santa without the suit. It was 90, with humid conditions. You guys and gal did a beautiful job. Many thanks.

A special thanks to Tom & Marie Leaming for their kind hospitality in hosting the party, Rita Morgen for the coordination and prep work; and to those ladies and gents that brought the wonderful desserts. Without your contribution, help and attendance, the party would not have been a success. A grateful thanks to Chris West & Joe Hayman for the added treat (free beer).

LVYC Crab Contest, August 4th

Fourteen members entered our annual event. The weather was sunny, no winds, and humid (100+). The grand prize winner was Lyle Clark 6 1/4" + 10 crabs exceeding 5 points; Russ Mehalick 6"; and Bill Morgen 5 3/4".

A BBQ followed with award presentations at the marina. Lyle was kind enough to cook his crabs (with his special recipe) and share them with the group. A grateful thank you to Lyle; and the members that participated. It was a pleasant day with friends.

Labor Day Picnic, September 2  (Cancelled)

Because of (last minute) conflicting schedules, our Labor Day festvities are cancelled. We hope to do an impromptu gathering mid September.

Congrats to our elected Officers. Thirty four members attended the festive dinner at Charlie Browns Restaurant. The staff of Charlie Browns did an excellent job in food preparation and SERVICE! Not one complaint. Congrats to the Management of CBS for their expertise and superb service!

Following a great coctail hour & socialization with old and new friends, the Officers were sworn in by newly elected President (LVYC) Bill Morgen and Vice President Russ Mehalick. The festivities continued for several hours, with farwells, and concluded at the marina for final goodbyes.
